What is a Licenced Clinical Social Worker? 

A Licensed Clinical Social Worker or LCSW, is a California State regulated professional who specializes in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of individuals, couples, children and families.  An LCSW must have completed a Master Degree Program in Social Work.  An LCSW must have completed 3000 hours of clinical experience under the supervision of a licensed therapist.  Only, after completing those many hours of clinical experience, a LCSW must pass two levels of licensure examination regulated by the California State Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS). 


What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy, or therapy for short, is a term used to describe the process of helping people take control of their lives from  problems resulting from mental health, emotional, or relationship issues.  Often referred to as "talk therapy", psychotherapy is conducted between a mental health care professional and an individual, couple, or a family.  Psychotherapy is practiced by psychiatrist, psychologist, and psychotherapists such as licensed clinical social workers.


Is It confidential?

Yes, communication during a session between a client and a therapist are protected by law.  However, there are exceptions.  I am a mandated reporter and If you state that you want to harm yourself or another person, I may be required to report this. Also, a Judge could order a subpoenaand I may have to share certain information about you.

Do I have to be a practicing Catholic?

Not at all.  You can feel free to discuss your beliefs with me and state whether or not you would like faith to be a part of the therapeutic process.


 

Does therapy really work?

Yes, therapy has been proven to be effective for many people.  Psychotherapy can have benefits and risks. It  often involves discussing unpleasant aspects of your life.  Therapy can also lead to better relationships, solutions to specific problems, and significant reductions in feelings distress, and a greater sense of purpose in life.  Yet, there are no guarantees.  Your success in therapy will depend on many factors including your own commitment and consistency.   It is important to discuss your real feelings.
